Free Football Picks- Week 1
By Ron Jumper

With the college football season beginning this weekend, I thought I would start a free weekly picks article every Wednesday. There will be 10 picks a week for you to choose from or to use all of them if you like. I’m only including 9 picks in this article because there will be a special article on Monday just for the Miami-Florida State game.

I’m going to take an imaginary $200 and place bets on games every week. I’ll keep track of my winnings and, hopefully, make you realize that my picks are the way to bet. How can you beat free picks? Most websites charge at least $25 or more for their top picks.

So without any more small talk, lets get started…

Boston College (-11 ½) covers vs. Central Michigan:

Boston College was 9-3 last season and looked dominant at times. They return their starting QB Matt Ryan, which is very critical in season openers. Central Michigan runs a pass-oriented 3 wide receiver scheme but is breaking in a new QB. It doesn’t help that Boston College’s entire secondary is back. BC 35-7.

Risk $11 to Win $10

Nevada (+12) covers vs. Fresno State

The Nevada Wolfpack football team is better than people give them credit for. In fact, this team beat Fresno State last season 38-35. Talented Nevada QB Jeff Rowe is back for his senior season. As I’ve already written about on this website, Rowe was a standout last year that nobody seemed to notice. Fresno State is breaking in a new offensive coordinator and starting quarterback, the offense will struggle out the gate. Fresno State 24-21.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Michigan (-26 ½) covers vs. Vanderbilt

Michigan is playing with a chip on their shoulder and should pummel Vanderbilt. Vandy is breaking in a new quarterback, after longtime starter Jay Cutler moved on to the NFL. I don’t see any way this game stays close at the Big House. Michigan 42-7.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Idaho (+29 ½) covers vs. Michigan State

The Vandals have a new coach in Dennis Erickson that should immediately improve them. Erickson has Idaho fans excited about Vandal football again. They don’t have enough talent to pull off the upset, but this one will be closer than the experts think. Michigan State 31-14.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Tennessee (-1) covers vs. California

The Vols need this victory very badly and should be very tough on their home opener. Cal doesn’t know what it is getting itself into by trying to go into Knoxville on opening day. Cal is the better team from an overall talent standpoint, I just don’t think their passing game will be enough to pull this one out. Vols 24-17

Risk $11 to Win $10

Florida (-20) covers vs. Southern Miss

Florida is going to put up a lot of points and I just don’t see anyway Southern Miss can keep up. Southern Miss was already breaking in all new starters at QB, RB, and most of the defense so opening up against Florida is asking a lot. Florida 35-10.

Risk $11 to Win $10

Arkansas (+8 ½) covers vs. USC

The Hogs are in desperate need of a big win and should give USC its money’s worth. Both schools are dealing with injuries and off-the-field problems. I see this one going into the fourth quarter before the outcome is decided. If Booty can come out sharp early and not make any mistakes then USC wins easy but, as I project, Arkansas’ blitzing schemes will force a turnover or two early that gets the crowd fired up. USC 21-17

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Ole Miss (-3) covers vs. Memphis

The Rebels have the best playmaker on the field on both sides of the ball. On offense, Brent Schaeffer is ready to run wild and make plays, whether it be running or passing. On defense, Patrick Willis is set to drive opposing offenses crazy with his playmaking ability. Memphis is going to have to come back down to earth after losing DeAngelo Williams to the draft, not to mention they are breaking in a new QB as well. Ole Miss 28-17.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

TCU (-7) covers vs. Baylor

TCU is just too good for Baylor to stay in the game. Jeff Ballard should slice and dice the weak Baylor defense, while Robert Merrill should run right through it. Just can’t picture TCU not winning by more than a touchdown. TCU 35-21.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

A Total Risk of $66 to Win $60

Balance Left: $134

Stay tuned for Monday’s pick between Florida State and Miami…
