Top Prospects 2009: Week 9
By Ron Jumper

I thought I would mix it up a little bit this week and do some player comparisons. By comparing the prospect to a current NFL player, it gives you the chance to imagine how his game translates to the next level. I thought I would give comparisons for the Big Board (excluding offensive lineman), then possibly expand it next week.

WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech

Crabtree is a great wide receiver prospect. I'm going with Reggie Wayne as a comparison. Not a freak of nature athletically, but a dangerous combination of speed and size to go along with a great feel for the game.

DE George Selvie, USF

With Selvie, he is an explosive athlete with a great motor. Not the biggest guy, but he makes up for it with athleticism. I'd have to compare him to Gaines Adams. For the Bucs, Adams has been great this season making plays in a variety of ways, whether it be dropping in pass coverage or getting after the QB. Selvie brings a lot of the same intangibles to the table.

LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

Curry has such an amazing combination of size, speed, and understanding of the game. I'm going to go with
A.J. Hawk for this one. I know most people hate interracial comparisons, but I think they have similar styles.

LB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State

This guy can really do it all, in terms of defending the pass and run. I'm taking Demeco Ryans here. Ryans is a very good all around player that has established himself as an elite NFL linebacker for the years to come.

QB Juice Williams, Illinois

When I look at everything he brings to the table, I am reminded of Donovan McNabb at Syracuse. Yes he could run around and make plays, but he had very underrated mechanics and arm strength. Williams has a chance to be a good NFL QB if he can continue to develop at the rapid pace he has. If you'll recall, he was terrible his freshman season and has been pretty good the last 2 seasons. Just don't say I didn't tell you so...

Player comparisons will continue next week.
