Free Football Picks- Week 3
By Ron Jumper

After finishing off the week with a big win on the San Diego-Oakland game, I’m sitting at a solid 11-8-1 record ATS. Our balance has grown from the original $200 to a very respectable $234. With all the small talk out of the way, let’s get to the point. This week has a ton of very intriguing matchups in both the NCAA and the NFL. However, yours truly won’t be betting on the majority of those marquee matchups. I know I’ve picked games before that were perceived as a toss up, but those are the kind of games that just a few plays could change me from going an impressive 8-2 to a miserable 2-8. From a gambling perspective, there are times you have to play the odds. Right now, with that many crazy matchups in one weekend, the odds aren’t in my favor. The best bet is to look at teams starting to get in sync and find their groove. Find that team that struggled out the gate but is starting to put the pieces in place.

Overall Record

11-8-1

Money Balance

$234

Arkansas (-6) covers vs. Vanderbilt

The Hogs have finally got the kinks worked out and found their true identity, which is to run the football. Granted, the Hogs aren’t going to put up 40 but they just have too many weapons for the struggling Vandy offense to keep up. Arkansas QB Mitch Mustain should feel more comfortable after getting his first game under his belt. Hogs 24-10.

TCU (+2.5) covers vs. Texas Tech

TCU is my darkhorse team this season. They have a lot of weapons and a very fast defense. With the Horned Frogs at home, I just can’t see the Red Raiders coming out of this one with a victory. Texas Tech has shown how team speed can expose their weaknesses on offense( see the Cotton Bowl vs. Alabama). TCU 28-24.

Risk $5.50 To Win $5

Oklahoma (+4.5) covers vs. Oregon

The Sooners are just to physical and the offense is starting to add more balance. Oregon struggled against Fresno St, who is pretty solid but nothing compared to Oklahoma. Oklahoma 35-17.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Fresno St. (-3.5) covers vs. Washington

Notice my trend of lack of respect for the Pac-10 yet? Any time a physical football team comes to town, with the exception of USC, the Pac-10 team usually crumbles. Factoring in Fresno State is due after just missing the spread back to back weeks and you’ve got a pretty sound pick. Bulldogs 24-10

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Utah (-20) covers vs. Utah State

The Aggies are bad. The offense hasn’t produced an offensive touchdown yet this season. As for Utah, I expect them to continue to find their groove before starting Mountain West play. Expect the Utes to dominate. Utah 42-7.

Risk $11 to Win $10

Carolina Panthers (-2.5) cover vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Panthers have too much speed on defense. I expect the defense to bring Brad Johnson back to reality on Sunday. Johnson played very well against what turned out to be just an alright Washington team. The Panthers will not go down 2-0 to start the season, they have too much pride for that to happen. Peppers and the rest of the d-line harass Johnson all day. Panthers 28-17.

Risk $11 to Win $10

Baltimore Ravens (-12.5) cover vs. Oakland Raiders

The Raiders were laughable on Monday Night Football. Art Shell’s mind just seems to be elsewhere. Meanwhile, the Ravens shocked everyone by putting a dominating performance on the Bucs. I know that you aren’t supposed to pick a team coming off a big win, but this is the Raiders we are talking about. Ravens 24-7.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

Dallas Cowboys (-5.5) cover vs. Washington Redskins

The Cowboys are going to come out and make a statement against their rival team the Redskins. As bad as Bledsoe looks at times, I’d still take him over Mark Brunell any day of the week. I loved Brunell in his prime, but that was several years ago. Cowboys 35-21.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

New York Giants (+3) cover vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Giants are a good football team. They just made mistakes and it cost them the game. You can’t drop potential picks against Peyton Manning and they did. You can’t beat yourself with penalties against a Tony Dungy defense and they did. Expect the Eagles to struggle against a real football team( no offense Houston). Giants 24-17.

Risk $5.50 to Win $5

R.C.’s Picks Of The Week

Last Week:
0-1

New Orleans Saints (-2.5) covers vs. Green Bay Packers

New Orleans impressed last week, at least compared to where they were last year. Green Bay, on the other hand, looked awful. While it’s no surprise the Packer’s offense struggled against the Bear’s strong defense, it is a surprise that the Bear’s offense looked like super-hero’s against Green Bay’s defense. If the Bears can score on the Pack, who can’t?

Arizona State Sun Devils (-11) covers vs. Colorado Buffaloes

Colorado is not good. After losing to D1-AA Montana State in the first week, they followed it up with a loss to Colorado State. While the Sun Devils do have a little controversy brewing with their quarterback situation, they are simply the better team in every phase of the game. I suspect it won’t be close.
