Free College Picks: Week 8
By Ron Jumper

We cracked the $300 mark, which isn’t too shabby. This week offers another interesting week of college football matchups. Hopefully, the good will keep on coming but, in the back of my mind, I know a rough day is inevitably coming. In gambling, you really can’t avoid losing streaks from time to time. It always seems to come when you least expect it. Not to worry though, I feel pretty good about this week’s picks.

Southern Miss (+18) vs. Virginia Tech

The Golden Eagles have been up and down this season, but the Hokies are pretty much just steadily going downhill. After a win against Cincinnati that was a little closer than expected, the Hokies have dropped two straight games to Georgia Tech and Boston College. Southern Mississippi has struggled at times on offense, but nothing compared to the struggles Virginia Tech has encountered. Expect Virginia Tech to win in the end, but if Southern Miss can get a big play or two early they are capable of the upset. Hokies 24-14

Western Michigan (-3.5) covers vs. Ball State

The only game that Ball State has won was against Buffalo. Don’t expect much to change this weekend. Meanwhile, Western Michigan has beaten Virginia, Toledo, and Northern Illinois. I just can’t imagine this game being very close. Western Michigan 31-10

Washington (+23) covers vs. California

The Huskies have been better than expected this season. That being said, I see Washington being able to hang around even without their starting quarterback. In the Pac-10, a 23-point spread is very tough to cover and it is especially tough when you consider Cal has covered the spread 4 games in a row. Expect the Bears to win, but to come out a little flat. Bears 31-17

Fresno State (+34.5) covers vs. LSU

The LSU Tigers are the superior team by far, but there is very good chance that the Tigers will give a lackluster performance. Even if they don’t, this is still the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have struggled this year and have yet to figure out what went wrong. Expect them to play with nothing to lose against LSU, which should translate to better success. LSU 31-14

Risk $22 to Win $20

Ole Miss (+21) covers vs. Arkansas

The Rebels have been playing well lately, though no one in the SEC has exceeded expectations like Arkansas has this season. Expect the Rebels to keep the game relatively close. Another factor is how well Arkansas runs the football. The clock running constantly should keep the Hogs from putting up too many points. Hogs 24-10

Risk $11 to Win $10
