Free College Picks: Week 9
By Ron Jumper

It is that time once again to foretell the upcoming weekend’s college football action. I can’t wait to make those picks that have you scratching your head during the week but miraculously keep coming true on Saturdays. The ACC has been an intriguing conference so far this season, with all the ups and downs. I have a couple of interesting picks in store from the wacky ACC that may surprise you. Stay tuned…

UTEP (+14) covers vs. Tulsa

Okay, so everyone and their dog is taking UTEP this weekend. Is it so bad that I jump on the bandwagon to? These two teams are just too similar in talent to have this lopsided of a spread. This game should get the week started off right on Friday night. Tulsa 35-31

Duke (+10.5) covers vs. Vanderbilt

In a battle of the “smart” schools, I just can’t see either team running off with this game either. Vandy doesn’t have the running game to sustain a big lead nor to make life easier on quarterback Chris Nickson, especially playing on the road. Another factor is simple logic, even if Miami is down to the cheer squad they have more talent than Vandy so saying Duke will get beat worse this week than by Miami is asking a lot. Vanderbilt 21-20

Georgia (+14) covers vs. Florida

The Georgia Bulldogs seem to pull it together when they play Florida. Granted this isn’t the typical Bulldog roster, I see Florida struggling to put up very many points in this game. This has the makings of being a slug-fest that ends in low teens. Gators 14-10

Miami (+5) covers vs. Georgia Tech

Amidst all of the Hurricane’s struggles this season, I see light at the end of the tunnel. Miami needed a reason to get back focused on football, I think they found their reason. After the brawl and the suspensions, I see Miami getting back to doing what it does best which is winning football games. On the other side, Georgia Tech was slaughtered last week by Clemson. The Yellow Jackets are poised to go down again this week because of their inability to move the offense down the field when Calvin Johnson isn’t involved. ’Canes 21-17

Texas (-12) covers vs. Texas Tech

The Longhorns just simply have too much manpower to give the Red Raiders any chance at keeping this game close. Expect this one to get ugly early and stay that way. Longhorns 42-10
