2007 Fantasy Football Preview: Quarterbacks
They’re all closer than you might think...

By Ric Atkinson

The most important position for an NFL team is without a doubt the Quarterback. They call the plays. They have their hands on the ball every play. One NFL QB even gets to run around waving his arms like a big goofy bird before each play. Another NFL QB gets to date Carrie Underwood (but probably won’t get to hold on FG attempts anymore).

Fantasy football is a horse of a different color. Well, sort of. QBs still score a ton of points in FF, but they really aren’t the difference makers they are in the real game. Here’s why: Your QB will score a lot of points for you, but so will the QB of the team you’re playing. The top twelve fantasy QBs will all score a ton of FF points this year. All twelve of them. There just won’t be that much difference between them. In fact, I’m projecting the difference in FF points between QB number two and QB number ten to be about 3 points per week. Notice I left out QB number one. No doubt he’ll score more than the rest of the QBs. But what are you going to have to give up to get him on your team? That’s the big question. Anyway, here are my projections for the top twelve fantasy football Quarterbacks of 2007:

1. Peyton Manning.
Yep, he’s going to score a lot of FF points. My best guess puts him at about six more FF points per week than the next QB on my list. The problem is you’re most likely going to have to use a 1st round pick to get him (maybe early 2nd if you’re lucky). Then you may find yourself weak at both RB and WR. Is it worth the risk?

Projections:
4250 passing yards, 33 TDs, 10 INTs, 50 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

2. Marc Bulger.
Two words for you: Contract Year. He is a great QB in a pass happy offense, with dollars to be made.

Projections:
4150 passing yards, 25 TDs, 11 INTs, 50 rushing yards, 0 rushing TDs

3. Drew Brees.
Reggie Bush should be more active in the passing game this year and that will be huge for Brees’ numbers.

Projections:
4100 passing yards, 24 TDs, 15 INTs, 50 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

4. Carson Palmer.
Very solid QB with great weapons. The Bengals seem to like to pass a lot in the red zone.

Projections:
3900 passing yards, 26 TDs, 14 INTs, 25 rushing yards, 0 rushing TDs

5. Tom Brady.
You’re not going to get anything spectacular with Brady. But you will get a consistent performance week to week. It will be interesting to see what effect Randy Moss will have on Brady’s scoring.

Projections:
3850 passing yards, 26 TDs, 15 INTs, 50 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD

6. Jon Kitna.
Yea, I’m serious, Jon Kitna. When you get Kitna you also get the following: Mike Martz, Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, and best of all a team that will be playing from behind almost all the time.

Projections:
3800 passing yards, 26 TDs, 20 INTs, 150 rushing yards, 3 rushing TDs

7. Tony Romo.
Romo looked pretty solid last year with TO dropping everything thrown to him. If TO is OK (physically, not mentally) Romo will be a very solid fantasy QB this year.

Projections:
3750 passing yards, 22 TDs, 18 INTs, 100 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

8. Matt Leinart.
A pretty heady QB and with Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Edge he’s got a lot of weapons. I’m looking for a very good 2007 (and a great 2008) from him.

Projections:
3525 passing yards, 20 TDs, 18 INTs, 10 rushing yards, 0 rushing TDs

9. Vince Young.
You’re taking a bit of a gamble when you pick him. But it might pay off big. If your league gives big rewards for QB rushing stats this is a real good play.

Projections:
2700 passing yards, 16 TDs, 16 INTs, 750 rushing yards, 8 rushing TDs

10. Donavan McNabb.
Keep a close eye on the injury reports. If he’s back at 100% you have to move him up to the top five.

Projections:
3250 passing yards, 21 TDs, 12 INTs, 50 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

A couple of other names to keep in mind: Eli Manning (he’s better than he’s been letting on), Matt Hasselbeck, Trent Green and Alex Smith.

One note: If your league gives any points for Dog Fighting statistics you know who you need to draft.
