Fantasy Rundown: Week 2
By Ric Atkinson

So week #1 is in the books and what did we see:

1. One team got caught cheating but looked awfully good doing it.
2. As good as the Colt’s offense was, their defense may have been better.
3. The AFC looks worlds better than the NFC.
4. The Ravens erroneously think they have a pass-first offense.
5. Randy Moss is really good when he wants to be.
6. Jacksonville is a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
7. Any QB in Mike Martz offense is a good fantasy play.
8. During the off-season, someone introduced Tony Romo to Jason Witten.
9. Cleveland and Atlanta are really, really bad.
10. Keith Olbermann is to TV what Cap’n Crunch is to naval warfare.
11. If you drafted Calvin Johnson in the middle rounds, you did well.

Here are some things I’m looking at for week #2:

Kansas City at Chicago:
The Chief gave the ball to Larry Johnson ten times while scoring three total points against the Texans. Now that’s some fine coaching right there. The Bears high powered offense also managed to score three points last week. The Bears D/ST is a huge play here. I don’t know what to tell you about LJ. I own him in a couple of leagues and will be starting him, but I’m not really excited about it.

Bengals at Cleveland:
This game may test the limits of Ocho-Cinco creativity. He needs to have at least a half-dozen celebration plans ready for this game. Start every Bengal you have on your roster this week. The Bengal’s D/ST is a great play this week that might be on your league’s waiver wire.

Atlanta at Jacksonville:
If the Jags lose this game Jack Del Rio should be fired on the spot. This team is too good to start the season off with two home losses to two of the weaker teams in the league. The Jags D/ST does look like a good play here.

Saints at Tampa Bay:
The Saints need this game, and they should get it. Tampa doesn’t have the offense to keep up with the Saints. Brees, Bush, Colston, Eric Johnson, and the Saint’s D/ST all look like good plays here.

49ers at St. Louis:
LT Orlando Pace’s injury really is a huge blow to the Rams, and to fantasy teams built around Steven Jackson and Marc Bulger. Alex Barron will move from the right tackle to the left (where he played in college) but he’s not going to be as good as Pace. The 49ers looked sloppy Monday night, but pulled out the win. I think we will see them use Frank Gore more this week.

Chargers at New England:
This should be a great game. Randy Moss looked like the missing piece to the Patriots puzzle last week, and a “start every week fantasy player”. Brady seems poised for a huge fantasy season. A guy to keep an eye on is TE Ben Watson. With the attention Moss and Stallworth will be drawing, Watson and all his freaky athletic ability may be open a lot this year. The Chargers D should be a test for the new Patriot offense. Oh, and the Chargers do have that Tomlinson guy. He’s always fun to watch.

Let’s look in the old mail bag:

James in Atlanta wrote:
“I drafted Steven Jackson, should I be worried or will he bounce back?”

James, the one bad game shouldn’t bother you. Last year the Panthers held SJ in check pretty well, so maybe they just have his number. The loss of Orlando Pace should concern you, but don’t panic just yet. Jackson is still a great RB and will serve you well.

Tony in Lexington asked:
“Who will have a better Fantasy season, Tony Romo or Ben Roethlisberger?”

This is a no-brainer to me. Romo is a top ten fantasy QB who will give you consistent points every week. Roethlisberger is IMO at best a bye-week fill-in. When it is all said and done, Pittsburg is still at its best when they are running the ball. Dallas, on the other hand, is best when they are throwing the ball. When looking at Ben’s numbers from last week, keep in mind that this year’s Browns team is just plain awful.

Rob in Tulsa asked:
Is the Vikings defense really that good, or are the Falcons that bad?

A little of both. The Vikings have one of the best run defenses in the league, and the Falcons have little to depend on except the run. It was just a really bad match up for Atlanta. The Vikings should struggle against team with a strong passing attack (like this week against the Lions), so I don’t see them as a start every week D/ST. But when the match-ups are right they will provide big fantasy number like they did last week.

Let’s wrap this up with my sleepers of the week:

TE Ben Watson, Patriots
RB Derrick Ward, Giants
Bengals D/ST
WR Ronald Curry, Raiders
WR Brandon Marshall, Denver
