2008 Top Prospects: Week 4
By R.C.

With another week behind us, there was a couple of amazing performances by quarterbacks and some disappointing outings from wideouts. Also, one prospect played his way back on to the list after falling off the radar. Check out this week’s rankings and stay in the know.

The Top 15:

1) Darren Mcfadden (RB – Arkansas)
Had another huge game highlighted by a beautiful 56 yard TD run. All in all, he ended up with 29 rushes for 173 yards for a 6.0 per carry average. It’s too bad Arkansas has fallen to 1-2 and put his Heisman hopes in jeapordy, as he’s without a doubt the top player in the country.

2) Glen Dorsey (DT – LSU)
Let’s put it this way: he actually got a vote in ESPN’s weekly poll of voters for the Heisman trophy. The fact that a defensive lineman even got a vote shows you what a player he is.

3) QB Andre Woodson (QB- Kentucky)
Forget the stats, Woodson just willed Kentucky to a victory at Arkansas this week. Despite being down much of the game, he never looked panicked or frustrated even though Arkansas was hitting him with regularity. The mental aspect of his game is what makes him so good. He just doesn’t make mistakes, as is evident by his record breaking 296 passes in a row without an interception.

4) Dan Conner (LB – Penn State)
Despite the loss to Michigan, Conner is still a great player. If you took him off this defense this team would be a shell of what it is.

5) Brian Brohm (QB – Louisville)
He threw for 555 yards and 4 TD’s. He’s cursed with a horrible defense and not much of a running game, so what he’s doing is still impressive. I question his mobility, though, he gets hit way too much. He stands in well and gets the pass off, but scouts aren’t going to like to see their future franchise QB taking as many hits as he does.

6) Dennis Dixon (QB-Oregon)
I’ll just give you the stats: 27 of 36 for 367 yards and 4 TD’s through the air, and another one on the ground. Wow.

7) Matt Ryan (QB – Boston College)
Threw way too many interceptions against a service academy (two). As much as I like Ryan, he has a tendency to make bad decisions from time-to-time. That will get you killed in the NFL.

8) Felix Jones (RB – Arkansas)
This is probably a little too high for this guy, but he deserves it for now. He had a 73 yard run and 133 total yards rushing against Kentucky. He also had an 82 yard kick return for a TD that should have sealed the game, and that’s what makes this guy so good. He showed great patience on that run, literally almost slowing to a walk and allowing his blockers to set up before turning on the jets and outrunning Kentucky to the end zone.

9) Derrick Harvey (DE – Florida)
Fell after having only 3 tackles against Ole Miss. I’ve still yet to see him perform at the level he played against Ohio State in the championship game last year.

10) Steve Slaton (RB – West Virginia)
I’m convinced Slaton is a lot of hype, not so much substance. Noel Devine is much more explosive, even though the stats don’t sometimes reflect it. Many times I’ve seen Devine break a big run deep into enemy territory, only for Slaton to come in to get the TD. If I had to have one or the other for my team, it’d be Devine. And before you call me crazy, actually watch these guys play and tell me you don’t agree.

11) DeSean Jackson (WR – California)
He only had 3 receptions for 39 yards against Arizona. Despite the highlight real he can be from time-to-time, there is no consistent production like you need from an elite player. Granted, he was going against exceptional cover corner Antoine Cason but if he doesn’t turn things around he’s going to be moving off the SportsOverload Top 15 List. He needs to show up this week in a huge game against Oregon.

12) Will Dunbar (S – UAB)
He’ll have a chance to show what he’s about this week against Tulsa. UAB will need a huge performance from him as Tulsa comes in with a high-flying offense led by senior QB Paul Smith.

13) Calais Campbell (DE – Miami)
Had 5 tackles against Texas A&M in game which Miami beat the tar out of the Aggies. Much like the rest of the season, he hasn’t been exceptionally flashy but yet he has been quietly productive.

14) James Laurinaitis (LB – Ohio State)
Only had 4 tackles in a 58-7 rout against Northwestern, but it’s hard to judge a guy in a game such as this.

15) Limas Sweed (WR – Texas)
He’s here this week, but we fully expect him to drop out again next week. He’s so inconsistent, but he showed up this week (although it was against hapless Rice) with 5 catches for 139 yards and 2 TD’s.

DROPPED OUT:

Early Doucet (WR – LSU)
INJURED

Watchlist:

-WR Adarious Bowman, OSU (6 catches 81 yards vs. Texas Tech)
-SS Kenny Phillips, Miami (3 tackles vs. TAM)
-RB Louis Rankin, Washington (14 carries 42 yards vs. UCLA)
-RB Marlon Lucky, Nebraska (21 carries 102 yards 1 TD, 11 catches 81 yards vs. Ball State)
-WR Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt (bye)
-WR Mario Urritia, Louisville (8 catches 81 yards vs. Syracuse)
-RB Kalvin McRae, Ohio (16 carries 57 yards, 2 catches 58 yards vs. Wyoming)
-TE Shawn Nelson, Southern Miss (bye)
-WR Dorian Bryant, Purdue (12 catches 150 yards 2 TDs vs. Minnesota)
-CB Antoine Cason, Arizona (1 interception vs. Cal)
