Fantasy Rundown: Week 4
By Ric Atkinson

Time to buy low and sell high.

Week #4 sees the beginning of the bye weeks, and a mounting number of injured players. What is a fantasy owner to do? Well, you’ve got two options, the waiver wire or working out a trade with someone else in your league. Here’s my take on those two options.

Depending on the size of your league you may be able to find a couple of valuable players on your leagues wavier wire. Here are some guys you might want to be looking for:

Brian Leonard – RB – St. Louis.
With Stephen Jackson out for the next few weeks Leonard looks to get a chance to handle the ball a lot. Of course Jackson wasn’t lighting it up behind the Ram’s decimated offensive line, so who knows what Leonard will do, but he should get plenty of chances to show what he can do none the less.

Owen Daniel – TE – Houston.
Until Andre Johnson gets back, Daniels looks like the #1 target in Houston.

Kenny Watson – RB – Bengals.
If Rudi Johnson is down Watson will get the call. Unfortunately for Watson this week the Bengals face a really good New England defense.

Brian Griese – QB – Chicago.
He gets his chance. Don’t expect huge numbers but if you are in a huge bind for a QB (or a league that starts 2 QBs) he might be worth a shot

Kurt Warner – QB – Arizona.
I’m hearing that both the coaches and players in Arizona are concerned about Matt Leinart’s work ethic. He’s not spending enough time in the film room or studying the playbook. Warner looked really good last week and may be a real threat to take the starting job, if Leinart doesn’t step it up.

Roddy White – WR – Atlanta.
He is one of the very few bright spots for the Falcons this year. Clearly the #1 guy in Atlanta with good speed and okay hands.

Now let’s talk about trades. The golden rule of trading is: Buy Low. Sell High. Trade the guy that’s been performing at a level he won’t be able to maintain for the guy that has been an early season disappointment who is about to pick it up. Here some guys that fit into both categories.

Buy Low guys:

QB: Drew Brees, Marc Bulger, Jay Cutler
RB: Larry Johnson, Reggie Bush, Frank Gore, Stephen Jackson (try to buy him really low)
WR: Marvin Harrison, Marques Colston, Tory Holt, Lee Evans

Sell High Guys:

QB: Brett Farve, Donavan McNabb
RB: Brian Westbrook, Lamont Jordan, Ronnie Brown
WR: Kevin Curtis, Andre Johnson, Plaxico Burress, Randy Moss (only sell him really high)

Of course you’ve got to analyze the strength and weakness of your individual team before you can make a good trade. If your team is off to a bad start and you’ve got depth at WR it may be worth trading one of your top receivers to get a top notch “buy low” running back that could take you team to the championship.

Let’s see what’s in the mail bag this week:

Greg in New Orleans asks: “Who should I start this week, Deon Branch or Ronald Curry?”

With both guys facing solid defenses this week, I go with Curry without a second thought. I’d project him to get a very solid 80 yards and one TD this week.

Bill in Omaha sent this one in: “Forget Steven Jackson, what should I do with Marc Bulger?”

I wouldn’t do anything. I wouldn’t trade him right now because you couldn’t get much for him. I’d be really surprised if there is anyone on your wavier wire better than Bulger so I wouldn’t drop him. But if I had any other viable option at QB, I wouldn’t start him either. Your best bet right now is to sit tight and hope things get better.

Gary in Fayetteville asks:
“Should I pick up the Bucs defense off waivers?”

I’m not sure that’s your best bet this week. If Dallas or Oakland are available they are both great plays this week. I also like the Jets D/ST this week against the Bills more than I like the Bucs at the Panthers.

Michael V. from Virginia sent the following: “Dude, I’ve got the munchies. Do you want to hit the Waffle House?”

I’m always up for the Waffle House, but unless you got rid of those dogs there’s no way I’m picking you up at your house.

That’s it for this week. Remember, always start your studs.
