2008 Fantasy Preview: Defense and Kickers
By Ron Jumper

With any and every draft, there will be someone who reaches up and snatches a defense or kicker way too early. The first 10 rounds or so should be to fill out your skill position players (tight end included of course), not for reaching on who think will be the top defense or kicker. There is no reason to take the Chargers in round 7 or Nick Folk in round 10, as there is similar value at those positions at a minimum of 2 or 3 rounds later.

I guess the thought of leaving a hole in my roster outweighs the added value of the top defense or kicker. I need to have a solid 2 QBs, 3 RBs, 3 WRs, and 2 TEs before I take either a defense or a kicker. For me, I just embrace that I won’t have the Chargers defense and focus on the Vikings, Cowboys, or Bears in rounds 11 and 12. As for getting a kicker, I normally wait until the last round and then pick up different kickers week to week depending on the matchups.

Defense/Special Teams:

1. Chargers:
A very safe choice to finish towards the top.

2. Vikings:
They have loads of talent and a weak offensive division.

3. Cowboys:
They upgraded the secondary to compliment that front 7.

4. Bears:
Surprise, another NFC North squad. They also have that Devin Hester guy you might have heard of…

5. Jaguars:
The Jaguars have a tough, aggressive defense with an upgraded pass rush.

6. Packers:
Favre wasn’t the only strength last season.

7. Steelers:
Always a reliable defense.

8. Colts:
Defense is overshadowed, but productive.

9. Ravens:
Should have a lot of ugly, low-scoring affairs.

10. Giants:
Should still have high sack and interception totals.

11. Patriots:
Talent suggests they should be higher, but the offense scores so many points that the starters both don’t play as much nor have as much pressure to keep the game low-scoring.

12. Buccaneers:
Flying under the radar as usual, the Bucs have a very good defense.

Kickers:

1. Nick Folk
2. Adam Vinateri
3. Nate Kaeding
4. Stephen Gostkowski
5. Mason Crosby
6. Jeff Reed
7. Phil Dawson
8. Shayne Graham
9. Rob Bironas
10. Neil Rackers

When looking at kickers, keep this in mind: the top kicker averaged 9.3 ppg, the tenth kicker averaged 7.8 ppg, and the 15th kicker averaged 7.2 ppg. The difference between kicker 1 and 15 is only 2.1 points! Don’t even think about reaching for a kicker…
