Fantasy Football 2008: Week 1
By Ric Atkinson

You did your homework. You put together your pre-draft cheat sheet with your leagues scoring system in mind. You went into you draft confident that you would get the best value out of every pick, and you got that late round sleeper that you had targeted before you walked in the door. Now it’s time for the games. Here are a few last minute thoughts that might make a difference in week #1.

Finding Value On Defense:

If you didn’t get one of the few premiere fantasy defenses in your draft you need to look at weekly matchups to find the D/ST that will give you the best chance for big points. This week I really like the Patriots (vs the Chiefs), the Ravens (vs the Bengals), the Colts (vs the Bears), and the Lions (@ Atlanta). A few defenses that are usually good plays that I would avoid this week are the Bears (@ the Colts), and Dallas (@ Cleveland).

Running Back Trouble:

So you drafted DeAngelo Williams or Jonathan Stewart or both. Now what? I can make a strong argument for both guys being the feature back. Williams averaged 5.0 yards per carry last year. Stewart was a high draft pick with a big strong NFL ready body. If you have any other viable RB options for the first couple of weeks you might do well to use that option until we get a good feel for how the Panthers will use these guys because not even John Fox knows yet. A big game from either back early on could go a long way to determining who will be the top option.

Favorable QB Matchups:

Here’s some fantasy Quarterbacks that have good matchups this week:
Payton Manning vs the Bears (27th ranked passing defense last year)
Tony Romo @ the Browns (24th ranked passing defense last year)
Ben Roethlisberger vs the Texans (25th ranked passing defense last year)
Jon Kitna @ the Falcons (23rd ranked passing defense last year)
Jeff Garcia @ the Saints (30th ranked passing defense last year)
JT O’Sullivan vs the Cardinals (28th ranked passing defense last year)
Matt Hasselbeck @ the Bills (29th ranked passing defense last year)

Favorable RB Matchups:

Here’s some fantasy Running Backs with good matchups this week:
Thomas Jones @ the Dolphins (32nd against the rush last year)
Darren McFadden vs Denver (30th against the rush last year)
Selvin Young @ Oakland (31st against the rush last year)
Marion Barber III @ the Browns (27th against the rush last year)
Michael Turner vs the Lions (23rd against the rush last year)

Sleeper of the week:
TE LJ Smith, Eagles

The wide receiving corp in Philadelphia is already really beat up. This should make Smith a big part of the Eagles passing game. I look for him to have a solid year if (and that’s a pretty big if) he can stay healthy. He is healthy for week 1, so rest easy for now.

Good luck in week one. And remember, no matter what: Always Start Your Studs.
