Top Prospects 2009: Week 2
By Ron Jumper

When looking at prospects, it is amazing where you will find players. They come in all shapes and sizes from schools in all shapes in sizes. I say that because I watched the Ball State-Navy game and I found 5 players that really impressed me. Not just with what they bring to the table in college, but how their respective games translate to the NFL. The five players (Ball State’s QB Nate Davis, WR Dante Love, TE Darius Hill, S B.J. Hill, and Navy’s Shun White) all seem to have attributes that will shine through once scouts make their way out to see them, watch them at the combine, and have them in for individual workouts. Trust me.

Starting it off, QB Nate Davis was great last year and he is playing well again this season so far. He throws the deep ball well and has very good pocket presence. After watching undersized speedy receivers like DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal have big rookie debuts, I couldn’t help but think Dante Love is next in line, as he made video game-like moves against Navy. TE Darius Hill has freakish size at 6’7” 240, with solid hands and football IQ to match. B.J. Hill made the play of the night… twice. With Navy driving late in the game, he recovered a fumble but they challenged and overruled it for some odd reason and, instead of pouting, he makes the game-clinching interception just a few plays later. What coach wouldn’t love that type of competitiveness in his players? Lastly, Shun White is a better athlete than what many would think because he plays at Navy. White also has a very shifty, unorthodox running style that makes it rare for the first defender to bring him down.

The Big Board:

1. WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech
You know you’re good when you only have 231 yards through 2 games.

2. LB James Laurinaitis, Ohio State
Has to have a big week against USC to keep Buckeyes in it early.

3. DE George Selvie, USF
Numbers aren’t there but double and triple teams are.

4. OT Michael Oher, Ole Miss
The Rebels offense is much improved this season.

5. QB Juice Williams, Illinois
Go ahead, call me crazy. Just wait.
