Fantasy Football 2008: Week 2
By Ric Atkinson

One week into the season and lots of fantasy owners are already scrambling to offset key players lost to injury. Last year’s league MVP and fantasy superduperstar Tom Brady is gone for the year, as is the Chargers All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman and Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson. So where do we go from here? Let’s take a look.

Waiver Wire Wonders:
(guys who might still be on your league’s waiver wire that could help your team)

Matt Cassel QB, New England
He’s no Tom Brady, but he will be playing behind a great O-line and with a line up of great skill position players. If the Pats can figure out a way to steal their opponent’s defensive signals and feed the info to Cassel, that is even better.

Eddie Royal WR, Denver
I don’t expect him to repeat last week’s performance now that Brandon Marshall will be in the lineup, but Royal sure looks like the real deal. He should be a great #3 WR for most fantasy teams. His route running was exceptional, he was juking and jiving Deangelo Hall like it was no big deal.

Dante Rosario TE, Carolina
Again, he’s a guy that benefited from his team’s #1 receiver being out, but he put up solid numbers and looked like he had his QB’s eye. Look for his numbers to drop off when Steve Smith returns, but any TE who catches 7 passes in one game is someone who is worth a roster spot.

Titans D/ST
The Titans play great defense and have a ball-control offense, making them an ideal fantasy defense. Somehow they are available in virtually every league. Grab them now.

Devery Henderson WR, Saints
Not someone to start every week but, if you have little depth at WR, Henderson’s upside is worth the risk. He makes a lot of big plays but, with no Colston, he should get more looks throughout the contest to have more rounded numbers.

Buy Low/Sell High:

Guys I’d be looking to add to my team at a low price:

Marques Colston WR, New Orleans
He’s going to miss the next six weeks. So if you have the WR depth to carry him until he’s back, try to steal him with a bargin basement trade offer. Colston could help your team finish strong down the stretch.

Earnest Graham RB, Tampa Bay
Look for the Bucs to lean even more on the running game with Jeff Garcia out of the lineup. Despite putting up solid numbers going back to last year, Graham is still undervalued by some owners. Make an offer and see if you can steal him.

Braylon Edwards WR, Cleveland
Check with the Edward’s owner in your league and see if last week’s bad numbers have them doubting themselves.

Stephen Jackson RB, St. Louis
The Eagles completely overwhelmed the Rams, and took them out of their game plan very early on. I look for things to get better for Jackson and the Rams. Remember six of the Rams remaining games are against the 49ers, Cardinals, and the suddenly hapless Seahawks.

Guys I’d be looking to trade while their value is at its peak:

Willie Parker RB, Pittsburg
FWP had a great week, but I look for the Steelers to throw more and run less in the coming weeks. I also expect Rashard Mendenhall will start to get more carries, including some in the Red Zone.

Michael Turner RB, Atlanta
He’s my fantasy player of the week, and I expect him to put up solid numbers for the rest of the season, but I’d still be willing to trade him if I got a top notch (and I mean TOP notch) player in return.

Donavan McNabb QB, Eagles
He’s an injury risk, with a weak WR corp, who just had a great week. If you have another option at QB, I shop him around. Check with the team that had Brady. They may be desperate to make a move. The Rams have a way of making everyone look great.

Sleeper of the Week:

David Patton WR, New Orleans
The injury to Colston turns Patton into the #1 WR in the Saints high-powered offense. As always, Brees will spread the ball around but I’m looking for Patton to be the guy that steps it up.

Last week, L.J. Smith was a great sleeper pick up at Tight End since he finished with a solid 39 yards and a TD. It could have been more though, McNabb targeted him early and often. Expect him to continue to play well.

Mail Bag:

Let’s look at a couple of questions from the old mailbag.

Steven from Auburn, Alabama asked “Is Reggie Bush finally ready to be a great fantasy running back or was it just a big game?”

We’re always told to watch for a wide receiver to breakout in his third season. Well Bush is a weird RB/WR hybrid (think a poor man’s Brian Westbrook) so it’s not that hard to see this (his third year) being his breakout year. Colston’s injury should give him a few more chances, and I’m looking for him to cash in on those chances.

Chad in Seattle emailed this one in: “What should I do with Matt Hasselbeck?”

Things have gone from bad to a whole lot worse in Seattle. Nate Burlson was the only proven healthy WR the Seahawks had and now he’s gone. Things are so bad backup QB Seneca Wallace may very well take a key receiving role in this week’s game (he fair caught two punts last week). Add to that the loss of starting RB Maurice Morris and things could be really bad for Hasselbeck this week (and it might make the 49ers D/ST a great play).
