Fantasy Football 2008: Week 3
By Ric Atkinson

It’s been a long time since we faced a week with this many questions marks. Let’s take a look at who’s hot, who’s not, and who we don’t know about.

Hot: Phillip Rivers
A 122.5 QB rating with six TDs and almost 600 yards in his first two games. Rivers has stepped up his game and is looking like a fantasy stud so far.

Not: LaDainian Tomlinson
Something is wrong with LT. He hasn’t practiced this week. The toe is obviously affecting his play. If you haven’t already picked up Darren Sproles, you need to. Luckily the Chargers play on Monday night this week. If you play in a flex league put LT in that spot and be prepared to slide Sproles or one of the Jets or Chargers WRs in that spot if LT is unable to go.

Don’t know about: Adrian Peterson
He was very limited in practice on Thursday because of a hamstring problem. I also don’t like the QB change. Frerotte looked very bad in the preseason going against 2nd team defenses. Feels like Jackson is being made a scapegoat for the Vikes 0-2 start. My guess is Peterson will play, but keep a close eye on this situation. The Vikes do have the luxury of having a very solid back in Chester Taylor to step in if AP can’t go.

Hot: Tennessee D/ST
Very solid defense with an excellent up coming schedule (Texans, Vikes, @Ravens, BYE, @Chiefs,).

Not: Stephen Jackson
But I’m looking for that breakout game this week. The Seahawk defense is not good and their problems on offense should give the Rams a lot of time with the ball.

Don’t know about: Michael Turner
He turned his ankle last week and had a disappointing week. But against KC this week he should return to week one form and have a huge week. Don’t be surprised if he comes back down to earth in week four against the Panthers solid D.

Here’s a quick Buy low, sell high list for this week:

Buy low:
Chad Johnson – can be had for a ham sandwich in some leagues
Stephen Jackson – Ram’s can’t go anywhere but up
Randy Moss – some Moss owners might be nervous about now

Sell High:
Phillip Rivers - when LT gets back to being LT, Rivers value will drop
Darren McFadden – he won’t be facing the Chief every week
Aaron Rogers – he won’t be facing the Lions every week
Desean Jackson – when the starters get back his value will drop

Here’s this week Sit/Start list:

Start:
Jay Cutler vs the Saints
JT O’Sullivan vs the Lions
Frank Gore vs the Lions
Julius Jones vs the Rams
Marshawn Lynch vs Oakland
Reggie Bush @ Denver
Chris Johnson vs the Texans
49ers D/ST vs the Lions
NE D/ST vs the Dolphins

Sits:
Jonathan Stewart @ the Vikings
Ryan Grant vs Dallas
Jon Kitna @ the 49ers
Tony Romo @ the Packers
Roddy White vs the Chiefs
Matt Jones @ the Colts

Let’s see what the old mail bag holds for us this week:

Mike in Salt Lake City asked: “Is Jay Cutler going to keep up this pace?”

Yeah, I think he will. He has a solid receiving corp in place (assuming Bandon Marshall doesn’t get suspended again) and he plays behind a solid O-line and has the strongest arm in the NFL. Everything is in place for a breakout season for Cutler.

Gary in Memphis sent this one in: “I drafted Tom Brady and Marc Bulger as my QBs, should I give Brian Griese or Kerry Collins a try?”

I like Collins more than Griese. It really feels like the Titans are now Collins’ team. He’s got the team’s respect and the Titans throw the ball a little more than the Bucs. All that said I like Matt Cassel more than either Collins or Griese. If he’s still on your league’s wavier wire pick him up now. He has a great match up this week (vs Miami) and one of the overall softest schedules for the rest of the year. Cassel is my Sleeper of the week this week. Look for him to put up huge numbers as the Patriots will use this game to let him gain his confidence.

That’s it for this week. Good luck and always start your studs.
