Top Prospects 2009: Week 5
By Ron Jumper

When discussing prospects, this isn’t just intended to talk about the ones that will go in the first round. It is also about discussing the lesser known players that will turn into big time players at the next level. Last season, as an example, I raved about Dwight Lowery over and over. No one would listen to me, he fell late in the draft to the Jets. Since then, he has had a wonderful start to his career and is looking like the real deal for the Jets. That is what makes this interesting to me, not just which guys are the obvious choices but finding that guy that nobody knows about yet. That being said, I just might have found him.

The small school quarterback is normally not a safe bet. However, there seems to be a big time QB in Conway, Arkansas. Nathan Brown of the Central Arkansas Bears is making himself known among NFL scouts and is generating quite a buzz with his play this season. He began the season on the long list of potential quarterbacks that could emerge as pro prospects, but has moved on to the short list. So far this season, he has thrown 14 touchdowns and no interceptions. Most importantly, he took advantage of his opportunity against the big boys (relatively speaking) this week when they traveled to Tulsa. He completed 24-33 passes for 342 yards with 3 TDs and no interceptions. Long story short, Brown made himself a legitimate NFL QB prospect and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Oh yeah, his tight end Marquez Branson just might be hearing his name called on draft day as well.

These days, it is amazing at how good players can be anywhere. That was never more evident to me when I was watching Northwestern take on Iowa. The only reason I was watching that game on ESPN Classic was because it was a Premium Pick for the weekend (I had Northwestern +9). However, I realized that there were 2 dynamic running backs in the game. Iowa’s Shonn Greene and Northwestern’s Tyrell Sutton are as good as it gets in the country when looking at running backs. Greene took me by surprise, but he has great size and a quick burst. As for Sutton, I knew about him but it took watching an entire game to realize his ability. I didn’t realize how good he could catch the ball out of the backfield. That ability, plus his size and speed, make him a very underrated running back prospect. Expect both these guys to climb the ladder and get some serious looks from NFL scouts.
