Fantasy Football 2008: Week 9
By Ric Atkinson

Well we’ve hit the halfway point in the NFL season. Seems like a good time to hand out some mid-season fantasy awards. So here we go:

Best Fantasy Value by Draft Position:

QB: (Tie) Kurt Warner and Phillip Rivers
Both of these guys could be had in middle to late rounds of the draft and are now top five fantasy QBs.

RB: Matt Forte
Picked in the mid-rounds of most drafts, Forte has been one of the most consistent fantasy plays in a very inconsistent fantasy season.

WR: Santana Moss
He’s the #1 fantasy wide receiver in some leagues right now and was drafted in the 7th round in a lot of drafts. Honorable mention to Roddy White.

TE: Owen Daniels
He was picked in the late rounds pick if he was drafted at all. Right now he’s a top 5 TE in most leagues.

D/ST: Buccaneers
Picked in the last round of most drafts, they are outscoring highly touted D/ST like the Vikings and Chargers by quite a bit. Honorable Mention to the Titans.

Two first round picks that are killing many fantasy teams:

1. Tom Brady – Nothing quite like losing your first round pick to injury in week one.

2.Joseph Addai – Missed games combined with the Colts surprisingly sluggish offense has led to an incredibly disappointing season. So far the Colts #2 running back (Dominic Rhodes) has scored more fantasy points than Addai.

*Note: Steven Jackson’s name was almost on this list, but the recent improvement in his and the Ram’s play kept it off.

Midseason Co-Fantasy MVP:

Drew Brees – the #1 fantasy QB who has put up great numbers in spite of losing Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, and Reggie Bush at different points in the season.

Clinton Portis – He’s leading the league with 118 rushing yards per game. He’s averaging 5.0 yards per carry, and scored 7 touchdowns. Bottom line he’s the #1 fantasy running back at this point in the season.

Two Guys who traditionally finish the season strong:

LaDainian Tomlinson – LT has always put up better numbers as the season roles on. With the chance to rest and heal during the bye this week, look for LT to be the LT of old for the rest of the season.

Lee Evans – In every season of his pro career Lee Evans has scored two thirds of his total fantasy points after week eight of the regular season. If he does that again this year he will end the season as the top fantasy WR by a pretty big margin.

Start/Sit:

Are you looking for a good sleeper D/ST play this week? Look no further than Houston. They will have a good week against the Vikings.

Does the name “Nnamdi Asomugha” mean anything to you? It should. He is the best cover cornerback in the NFL right now (think Champ Bailey in his prime). If he’s so good why isn’t he a household name? Well first off he’s slaving away in Oakland, and second doesn’t have any interceptions because he’s so good QBs don’t even try to throw to the guy he’s covering. What does this mean to a fantasy owner? If one of your wide receiver is facing Oakland you might want to leave him on the bench. Are you listening Roddy White owners? Don’t be surprised when Asomugha shuts White down this week.

Let’s look in the old mailbag this week:

Jim is Spokane ask: “Should I pick up Donnie Avery?”

Definitely pick him up. Things are improving in St. Louis and Avery seems to be the guy that has benefited the most from the improvement. If he’s still available in your league grab him up now. He should give you solid numbers from here on out. On a side note Marc Bulger’s fantasy value is on the rise. He could make a great bye week fill in.

Max in Delaware asked “Are there any buy-low QBs I should be targeting?”

Right now might be a good time to make a run at Donavan McNabb. Kevin Curtis is back and Brian Westbrook is healthy. That should add up to improved number for McNabb.

That’s it for this week. Good luck and remember to always start your studs.
