Jumpology: Setting The Bracket
By Ron Jumper

So we are another week closer to the NCAA Tournament and things are getting clearer and clearer as to who is in and what they need to do to stay there. For this edition of Jumpology, I’m giving you my bracket as of right now. Things will change by this time tomorrow but it gives you an idea none the less. I tried to be fair and unbiased when balancing non-conference schedule, conference record, RPI, SOS, and special circumstances (injuries, suspensions, etc.). However, if your team isn’t in, I’m sure you can spin one of those against me to prove your point. In advance, congratulations…

As for my bracket, here are the seeds:

1 Seeds:
Pitt/Big East
UNC/ACC
Oklahoma/Big 12
UConn

2 Seeds:
Michigan State/Big Ten
Memphis/C-USA
Duke
Louisville

**So if you’re wondering how I seperated the ones from the twos, I didn’t go exactly by the polls or RPI. I actually examined their records against the RPI Top 25 to see who held their own against the big dogs. Pitt went 5-2, UNC 4-1, UConn 4-1, and Oklahoma 2-1. The second seeds fared well but not as dominant, with Memphis going 1-2, Duke 4-3, and Michigan State 3-2. Louisville finished 4-1 against the RPI Top 25, which is why I bumped them to a second seed instead of Kansas.

3 Seeds:
Kansas
Wake Forest
Villanova
Xavier/A10

**Most don’t have Xavier this high, but they beat Missouri, Memphis, and LSU plus faring very well in the solid A10. Where is the love?

4 Seeds:
Clemson
Missouri
Washington/Pac-10
LSU/SEC

5 Seeds:
Gonzaga/WCC
Florida State
Illinois
Marquette

**Most don’t have Florida State this high, but they are dangerous people. Toney Douglas and all that size form a similar matchup problem to that of which Wake Forest is going to cause in the tournament.

6 Seeds:
Utah/MWC
UCLA
Dayton
Purdue

7 Seeds:
Tennessee
West Virginia
Arizona State
Butler/Horizon

8 Seeds:
Syracuse
Cal
South Carolina
BYU

9 Seeds:
Texas
UNLV
Arizona
Utah State/WAC

10 Seeds:
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Boston College
Providence

**When deciphering seeds 7-10, it is really hard to separate them. I won’t be surprised if any of the 7-10 or 8-9 matchups are flip-flopped.

11 Seeds:
Ohio State
Siena/MAAC
Creighton/MVC
Kentucky

12 Seeds:
Texas A&M
Florida
Oklahoma State
Rhode Island

13 Seeds:
Davidson/Southern
VCU/CAA
Western Kentucky/Sun Belt
Vermont/ American East

14 Seeds:
Buffalo/MAC
Weber State/Big Sky
North Dakota State/Summit
America/Patriot

15 Seeds:
Jacksonville/Atlantic Sun
Stephen F. Austin/Southland
Cornell/Ivy
Robert Morris/Northeast

16 Seeds:
CS-Northridge/Big West
UT-Martin/Ohio Valley
Morgan State/MEAC
**Play-In**Radford/Big South
**Play-In**Alabama State/SWAC

Last 4 In:
Texas A&M
Florida
Oklahoma State
Rhode Island

I know, I know. Rhode Island? Yes, the Rams are second in the A10 standings and only have UMass to play. That should put them at 23-8 and 12-4 in A10 play. They beat Penn State, Dayton, and VCU. Not to be ignored, they played Duke to within 3 @Duke, played Providence to within 1 @Providence, and lost to Xavier 67-65. I think there is such a thing as quality losses and that is what those are. The Rams proved they can hang with the big boys and, if they can get to 25 wins by winning an A10 tourney game or two then it should be hard to leave them out.

Florida just needs to win @Mississippi State Wednesday, to avoid what might be an elimination game if they lose to Kentucky on Saturday.

First 4 Out:
Penn State
St. Mary’s
UAB
San Diego State

They all have the same problem, they played no one in the non-conference. The committee frowns on poor non-conference resumes and lack of quality (RPI Top 50) wins. The best non-conference win between the four of them is Utah State (St. Mary’s) and then Arizona (UAB). The rest of the work was done in conference play. That doesn’t get it done in today’s age of college basketball.
